i didn't mean to. i was reading the millenium trilogy and my threshold for vulgarities was way lower than normal.

besides, she did jab me in the knee with a pin.

right. i take back what i said about multiple personalities in different social contexts. they have obviously bled into one another in ways i have not forseen.

and now some cocksure old idiot has decided to take my letters to japan and send them off with 55 cents worth of postage when they have clearly been labelled "AIRMAIL".

thus increasing my propensity to shoot my mouth off with some of the more delightful swearwords in my arsenal. those letters meant something to me, you know?

dammit. this is ridiculous.

i haven't been writing anything for ages!

essays don't count.
university is not teaching me how to think; it's teaching me what to think.
and i'm succumbing to it because i'm lazy and it's easy! headaches are caused by too much information instead of unfathomable processes.

there actually are right and wrong stands to take in ethical conundrums. ethics being reduced to mere facts and the application of those facts to situations is kinda sad.

while school provides interesting opportunities other than studying, everyone thinks alike (or seems to think alike, because i haven't entered into deep conversations with that many people. it takes the right occasion to cross the line).
that's where tembusu comes in: it's truly refreshing to talk to people from arts, science, engineering or computing and getting to know them personally in a setting where the goal is to simply have fun and not win something or work to produce something (even though that's satisfying too).

and it's great to be singing again; i feel like my other self has come alive.

giving a tour to japanese students tomorrow and i am so NOT confident about my japanese.

Even this does not begin to explain the complexity—for in real life, at least, most people change, at least subtly, when they are with different people. The changes can be pretty major—I remember well my summer as a performer at the Sundance Summer Theatre in Utah. biked to the library and back on saturday.

it felt like flying. not just because i was whizzing past all the pedestrians, but because the decision to do so was so spontaneous and i was out of the door and on the road before anyone could say anything. it was liberating! exhilarating! an adventure!

i think i was being a little like one of those irritating cyclists who don't look where they're going and almost collide with people. or jostle for space on the sidewalk.
why have they not built those cyclist paths they were promising a few years back? D:
the country is an ideal one - so small you could bike from one end to another (with a little effort). yet it's one of the most dangerous countries to bike in, because everything's so cramped you can't go at full speed for more than 500 metres.

i wish i were in japan. or holland. where cyclists are widely accepted and not terrorized out of their wits by motorists.

what's there not to like about bicycles, really?

long time no see.

the long wait ended on wednesday and everything falls into place. i think i'm just a very lucky ass.

suddenly, my life has direction for the next, oh, 15 years.

i've met many people who are concerned that i will come to regret it. well, i've made some really bad choices and i've lived with them without agonizing over them too much. every experience means something to me, and the more disastrous it was the more impact is has on how i live and handle my life. (and you can always brag about them years later when you're talking about incredibly stupid things you've done.) i don't think i ever seriously regretted going through them.

so i'll stick with this deal and see where it brings me. at best, it is perfect for me. at worst, i'll still have a place in society to do good work.
the ridiculousness of the bond is thrilling, in a way.

think of it like this: i won't have to make any more major life-changing decisions till 15 years later!

but yes, i am thankful.

anyway, i've been throwing myself into lots of new stuff these past months.

there was the 3/11 earthquake that brought me out from my comfortable apathetic shell; it was the first natural disaster that i watched so closely and felt so keenly for the people. (is it immoral to be so hugely biased?) i remember listening to TBS radio on the very first day when casualty reports were still trickling in - a few people here and there in tokyo - and then news came in that 300 bodies were found on the shore and there was a shocked, grim silence in the broadcasting room. of course, the numbers have soared far beyond that now, but the feeling of pain and loss at the time was equally acute.

yet i didn't have the courage to step out and help. i could only glue myself to twitter, as if being within the community of fear would make a difference. and argue with my family about radiation levels. pathetic. (i'm glad singaporeans weren't very caught up in sensationalist reporting. )

please continue to support japanese products and don't shun travelling to japan after the situation is resolved! (i hope it will be soon.) i believe that consumer confidence and tourism is what they need the most to bound back at this point, more than donations or messages of encouragement.
only the rest of the world can give them that.

then the elections came around. i stopped trying to think and feel like the japanese and found myself, for the first time, relishing being a singaporean. how come nobody told me elections were this exciting! if it had been in 2009 i wouldn't have struggled at memorizing all those political terms in GP; i learnt all of them in a week. again, twitter everyday (i have given up on facebook). i suppose the period was right with all the time on my hands to go for rallies and watch the news on TV.

i am looking forward to the next general election, but i will have to be in a different frame of mind altogether. i confess to spending most of the time laughing at the drama and finding my position on things instead of thinking about the real problems.

work is as usual and i'm knowing more and more people by the day. this period of time is the best, when you're getting to know people enough to not be strangers, but haven't been exposed too much to their annoying/ scary/ weird sides yet. i don't think i would have ever completely fit in, due to my age and status, but if i had stayed i could be working with a bunch of fun people who really know how to chill.

the project isn't making much headway, and while my supervisors hope i will be struck with some brilliant idea that saves the day, all i can work at daily is to share the workload.

something i just screwed up: electone. i missed the deadline to register for the exam. and i'm ending it here. (another item to add to my list of stupid things i've done.)

it's a huge waste and i am very sad about it, yet i was hanging on to it more for my parents than myself. maybe it's time to let go. but if i let go, what message am i giving myself?

what will keep me going on in everything else?

tuition. someone's grades in my hands. it's not just about my own future, now. it's nice to have something to pull myself out when i get too caught up in my own affairs.

progress is slow but I WILL SEE TO IT i swear.

also, i've been reading and reading and reading because this opportunity to read good books every single day will never come again. it's exhilarating to fall into the world of one book after another and from fiction to abrupt reality, in and out.

into orson scott card now, i highly recommend. the intensity his writing can achieve even when half the conversations are in ungrammatical or flat-out broken english is amazing.

and thank you to the people who have been pulling me to see plays and movies and joining all sorts of events. or just going out. it's unfamiliar territory sometimes, but i can tell you that i'm glad i went.

damn, i will miss these times.

sometimes i contemplate flunking all my exams spectacularly. it's comforting to know you've hit rock bottom before, and that you can't go any farther.

but this is probably not a good time.

i remember, in primary school, how i deliberately made a mistake in my chinese paper so that i would have something to correct when i double-checked it.
of course, me being me, i forgot.
a second after i handed it in, i realised.
i asked the teacher for my script back. the teacher refused, of course. what could i tell him/her? that i wrote the wrong answer on purpose? (he/she tried really hard to console me, though.)
i think i cried, then. over a mark. a mark! in primary school! but it was more at the sheer stupidity of the whole situation.
i never got my script back, and i never did it again.

this is the me who ate grass in kindergarten, and in primary school poked holes in the caps of fizzy drink bottles with a nametag so that the drink fountains out into your mouth when you shake it.
erm.

nowadays, we don't get to double-check.

i will prevail! by studying 5 things a day!
then i'll look for an exam unimportant enough to flunk.
and contemplate.

i won't say more - theorizing about it needs re-watching to look out for details and rules of the dream world.

many things still don't add up. i don't think they're supposed to. we're supposed to make them add up on our own, or live with the questions.

the only thing is, i feel it didn't match up to all the hype.
probably because i've been exposed to too much hype.

FMA ends.

the series that started it all for me.

*mourns*

it ended all too perfectly.
but i love the irony - defying the meaning of "fullmetal", then the very meaning of "alchemist" itself.

embarrassing reminiscing stuff.

this was the series that started all the craziness, that plunged me into this world, the turning point that determined how i am now (japan-crazy, as my family puts it, and knowing a lot of interesting things and people).
remember when we were a little younger, and relatively stress-free? we spent our breaks rushing through tankoubons, drawing the FMA symbol on the class board, and all over our worksheets and notebooks and any available surface, fangirling like only fangirls can, and enjoying every single minute of it.
ahh, the days. the discoveries.

i'm glad i was, and am part of the madness. i salute the people behind it (you guys know who you are).

over these 4 years (yeah, i've not quite graduated from a noob yet), i've gone from the volumes, to zomgfta's scanlations, then to the really fast but really bad scanlations on onemanga when zomgfta gave up.
though FMA wasn't the shiniest nor had the prettiest bishies, its emotions were the rawest and its fights were the most interesting. [edit: OMG i forgot - THE MOST EPIC OMAKES EVER. ever.]
and i think i'll still be able to draw that symbol 30 years down the road.

so, it's over. (i suppose it's a good thing it didn't drag for long.)
i guess i can always read it again. or finally get down to watch the anime. or stalk arakawa-sensei. or save and buy the books.

after all, it's just the beginning of many more good things to come.

pw outing yesterday, which is a huge oxymoron.
it was a hell lot more fun than i expected, even though our conversations mainly revolved around niao-ing people.

i shall keep it at that.

which reminds me to go upload photos. (damn, there goes my don't-use-fb-other-than-to-kop-photos policy. i only found out how to tag photos the week before last.)

thus ends the TAG experience.

the coolest part was probably the surgery.
(tumours in the mouth and lymph nodes; they slit the skin at the throat, pulled it over the chin, cut out the lymph tumours, then they hacked the chin into two, and got rid of the lump under the tongue. i could see the blood pulsing through the jugular veins and all the muscles. and they sealed any holes they make using heat, so the room frequently smelled of burnt flesh. then there are the other more mundane but equally important stuff. i wonder how the patient felt after he woke up - i presume it's a he because he looked vaguely he-like under all the green sterile sheets.)

other than that, there were the consultations. (i stood for longer than i ever have in my life, i think.) watched people paying hundreds of dollars to get their earwax cleaned out (!). there was also the endoscope (which costs a bomb once the doctor sticks it in your nose), and interesting cases (possible cancer, that sort of thing). and the balancing test, which is too much of a bother to describe.

(i'm not sure if i'm supposed to be telling you all this, so i put it under expand/collapse just in case. not like it makes a big difference.)

doctor's life: wake up early in the morning, stand around for hours in the wards, get whacked (as the head doctor said) by your bosses, see patients for hours, have 15-minute lunches, multi-task, be in a constantly busy state the whole day, stay overnight for call duty.
but i guess the gratification has to come from somewhere, for each and every doctor/ nurse/ saikang warrior in the hospital. (or maybe if you derive great satisfaction from removing earwax.)

(be kind to nurses. and if you know one, go buy them those feet massagers.)

3 days wasn't much, but it was definitely better than nothing. should i study medicine? i still don't know. but i think i'll be able to make a better decision, when the time comes.

of course, results are everything (then nothing) when it comes to medicine, so i'm resuming my 穷书生 life from now on.

well, it wasn't all too bad, so i shall just banish it to a small shriveled corner in my mind and worry about it only next year.

i'm actually being partially genuine about this.

(the learning was interesting, but the prepping for the exam was not. so wasn't the lab report. note to juniors: TAKE PROTEOMICS unless you enjoy self-studying very much and want to get your H3 over and done with in half a year.)

made new friends whom i don't know if i'll keep, but it was fun bashing the system for being a failure and pulling through together in general. you are all really interesting people!

found a new home in the library. i wish they'd get more of those nice chairs. and change all the computers. i think i'll be back, nevertheless.

anyway, the feeling is great. goodbye, goodbye to my H3 life! i am a normal specimen of education once again.

choir concert yesterday.

songs i liked: the standard fare (burung, lullaby, kalinda(!), orpheus, jap game, mambo) as well as tsubasa, itsuki no komori uta, SATB version of 催咚催, and mate saule.
mate saule was beautiful! haunting.
so was lullaby, but listening to it from so far away took away some of the intensity i've heard before.
(sorry jane i didn't record! ><)

and of course, xulie's solo speaking part in i-dunno-what-dialect in 猜调!
i must congratulate him for managing to look cool on stage (i was sitting very very far at the top, though. :D)
i must also congratulate the guys for sounding so good! (there were seniors, i know, but there weren't any bad sounds with the good sound as far as i could tell.)
couldn't really see the girls, i could only tell them apart by their figure.

what was kind of weird was watching some of my seniors perform on stage with the current batch and the junior batch, while sitting behind some of my other seniors (who went and dyed their hair and everything already.)

did something long overdue for a good friend, which felt nice.

hugged a lot of people, gave stuff, and felt a bit extra, because everyone had their own bunch of supporters and were rushing around all over the place.

met seniors i truly, truly respect.

yes, i enjoyed myself.
i decided not to be sad.
felt a bit wistful, but it made the songs all the more beautiful.

there are a few people whom i can sustain a normal conversation with on public transport.

the rest i just take to ignoring. if they insist on sitting with me, we will very probably spend the whole ride in awkward silence or holding fragmented conversations about generic things like school, and teachers, and events, and school.

then, there are the people i can sit with in complete silence. it's not awkward - it's comfortable. these people are hard to come across.

then there are all the in-betweens.

maybe my (very bad) habit of ignoring acquaintances on the bus is due to the fact that i look forward to every bus ride as a time to sink into music and sleep.
(i loved it when they removed TVmobile.)

who knows what consequences this will have in the future? but for now, i'm happy to take the bus alone.

going out today was fun!
although a little quiet, with 3 people.
shutter island: 久しぶりに良い映画を見た。 it's my first NC16 in the cinemas, by the way!
we had fun in our own way. :D

i realized you can't sing shoegaze at karaoke since the instruments are the star of the show and the voice is an accesory. defeats the point.

the lab report's in, 2.4's over and i'm feeling a hell lot better than i have this whole week.

okay, some stuff to gush about.

1. i love this line from UVERworld's ハイ！問題作 (from the new album LAST).

the shameless advertising, the acknowledgment of the countless mispronunciations of 儚くも永久のカナシ and the way takuya∞ says it is just ... cute. (the "∞" is obligatory :D)

2. FMA.
was/ is 震撼! (i'm sorry that's not grammatically correct.)
i'm not sure about the stage of progression of the plot, things still seem to be happening.

and this moved me in ways i cannot explain.

3. THE SHANGHAI EXPO INTERNATIONAL MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA ANGMOH GUY.
okay, i went to do research: he's called Vitas and he's russian.
OMG HIS VOICE. O: his falsetto is so pure! i bid all aspiring tenors to go listen!
and his range!! i've heard guys go higher, but never while singing a chinese song about mountains and rivers. it makes your hairs stand on ends.

he just owned about everyone else invited, IMO.
(who cares about Rain? *shrugs*)

4. watch this.

apple fans, i'm really sorry. P: even i winced when he started smashing it. the iPad is truly beautiful even with all its problems with flash.
watch it in HD! it's all the more morbidly fascinating.
if it catches your fancy, you can also go watch him blend lightsticks, magnets, fake diamonds and other equally interesting stuff.

i watched my dad tend to a butterfly.

it was flitting around the lights, a rare visitor to a bad place of attraction.
since it looked like it was going to get a concussion banging its head on the lights, we decided to switched them off.

it crash-landed into the night's dinner, which happened to be laksa.

my sis immediately ran off screaming (interesting, because she only started screaming when it hit the bowl and not when it hit the lights).

my dad, however, who meant well when he turned off the lights, rushed to fish it out of the gravy like a paramedic who just dropped the handles of the stretcher while the injured was on it.

he then brought it out to the corridor and tried to wipe it dry with tissue paper.
its wings were all stuck together and it couldn't do much except crawl around lopsided.
(it seemed to like the tissue paper.)
it was a rare sight - a grown man being exceedingly gentle to a flailing insect.
it made me smile.

when i last checked, the butterfly could open its wings but it wasn't flying around.
it made my sis and i remember the stuff in our old bio textbooks about oil spills and wings.

butterflies are so frail.

my mum thinks my dad has just lost all his karma he has worked so hard to achieve in his life.
i think (and i hope) he just gained some.

thanks for everything, guys! for sticking through all that crappy stuff the school made us do together. i miss working in a group; J2 consists of a lot of fending for yourself.
i'll treasure the piece of paper. and the experience.

well, everything turned out to be good and i'm glad things happened the way they did!
looking at people getting their results was also quite interesting. ;D

met my old friend on the bus the other day.
he looks totally different. and in poly now.

somehow people in poly seem really mature.
they think about their careers and their future.
while we're still mugging our heads out and believing everything the teachers tell us.

anyway it was nice to still be able to talk normally, and nice to be able to talk without insulting each other (you know, gender divide in primary school ...)

i miss my primary school days and my student care days where we played catching every friday and dog-and-bone every day in the holidays and there wasn't much mugging involved.

Answer:
Genes must be universally present in all species/organisms that are to be phylogenetically analysed and is easily recognizable by the conservation of their sequences in many species.
There should be enough gene sequence variation in them so that we can determine which groups of species/organisms share the same evolutionary relationship and origin.

so. cny's over.

what have i done?
attained a stack of angpow. (merely symbolic in nature, because my parents suffer losses of a similar magnitude.)
had a reunion with my relatives and cousins. (really? i'll ask myself that again. really?)
wore havoc clothes. (it was fun looking at my relatives' reactions.)
did homework. (more like, used it as an excuse.)

cny was 3 days of being superficial and pretending to be concerned about each other while looking at the adults stabbing each other in the back.
only the kids were spared.

and i spent a large part of it challenging traditions (like refusing to buy new shoes) and being cynical (do you believe what you're praying to, anyway?).

that was harsh.
but hey, the 2nd day was fun. (my mum's side is alright. my cousins are all guys. how political can you get around guys? first thing they say after 恭喜发财 is "开table 开table! who wants to play 21点!")
and i did get around to packing my room.
and it was a sorely-needed break.

i got these a lot:
1. wts you're 18 already?!! i thought you were, like, still in secondary school!
2. oh this year A levels? aiya easy for you lah. (DIE, I SAY)
3. so what are you gonna do after As?

my sis and i were wondering what kind of cnys we would have when we get married and all.

one of those rare days where i walk with a spring in my step and the wind blows cool on my face.

walking home is great. i should walk home more. besides, it saves money.
timing is important, though.

kop-ed the flower from ikebana. :D
a hard-to-come-by subject.
flowers are rather unloved.
the plant involved puts so much effort and energy and sugars and stuff into making these delicate extrusions, then humans come along and snip them off and leave them to wilt in their unnatural homes.
flowers look better in a field of grass than in a long vase or in a shallow vase or in any vase at all.
still, being formal and unnatural is very japanese, i guess.

need exercise or i will pull my ligament when i am walking down a slope! *rolls eyes*
or perhaps i will pull them on one of those calf-stretching sessions.
